A Flower Found on the Road - The Story Behind Its Beauty

One fine day, while my family and I were on our way to a song shoot, something

unexpected caught our attention.

In the middle of our journey, during the shoot, we noticed a flower lying on the road.

For a moment, it felt as though the flower was sleeping on the dark surface.

Sleeping? Perhaps that’s the only word that could capture its stillness and quiet beauty.

It was a cloudy day. Strong winds were blowing, and tall trees surrounded us, covering

much of the sky above. On that dark road, at the corner, lay this unique flower.

My brother gently picked it up and showed it to my mother and me. At first glance, I was

confused — I couldn’t clearly identify its petals. Yet, its unusual structure and striking

colours instantly drew us in. We decided to capture it in our camera as a memory.

I couldn’t fully understand the structure of the flower. Perhaps the heavy wind had caused it

to fall from the tree. I wondered — was the pink portion an unbloomed petal? I wasn’t sure.

Curious, I began to explore and research more about this fascinating flower.

Discovering the Cannonball Tree

This flower comes from a tree known as the Cannonball Tree, scientifically called Couroupita guianensis. It belongs to the Lecythidaceae family.

The tree itself is large, with wide branches and a thick trunk. The  leaves are long and glossy

in shape. One of its most unique characteristics is that its flowers grow directly from

the trunk — a feature known as Cauliflory.

The Beauty of the Flower

When in bloom, the tree’s trunk is covered with stunning flowers. Their rose-pink tones fill the entire trunk, creating a breathtaking view that is both eye-catching and heartwarming.

The flower has:

• Thick petals

• Typically six petals

• A strong, pleasant fragrance

What makes it even more unique is its structure. The flower contains two types of stamens:

• Ring-shaped stamens that produce fertile pollen

• Hood-shaped stamens that produce sterile pollen

This unusual design plays a key role in attracting bees. Especially, Carpenter bees are highly attracted to this flower and are commonly seen gathering around it for pollination.

 Color Description

The flower displays a beautiful blend of many colours. First, let us look at the petal colours.

Petal Color

• Base: Rose pink

• Mid-tones: Salmon pink

• Inner shades: Coral red or reddish pink

• Edges: Creamy yellow to pale yellow

Overall, the petals can be described as rose pink to coral red with creamy yellow tips.
The dominant petal colour is rose pink.

Stamen Colour

Now, let us look at the color of the stamens.

• Ring-shaped stamen: Bright yellow to golden yellow

• Hood-shaped stamen: Golden yellow on the inner side, with a pinkish-red to coral

• pink outer surface

Overall, the stamens can be described as golden yellow with pinkish-red shading.

 The Fruit and Its Features

The tree produces large, round fruits that resemble cannonballs — which is how it got its name.

• The fruits have a hard, brownish-grey outer shell

• Each fruit contains numerous seeds (around 65 in smaller fruits and up to 550 in larger ones)

• A single tree can bear up to 150 fruits at a time

• The pulp inside is white

The mature fruits are heavy, and when they fall, they can crack open due to their weight. 

Note: Due to the heavy weight of the mature fruits, caution is advised when planting

the trees near walkways or areas with frequent human activity 

The fruit takes a long time to mature — sometimes up to 18 months.

 

Origin and Uses

The Cannonball Tree is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, especially regions like Guyana, Suriname, and the Amazon in Brazil.

Today, it is widely grown in tropical countries such as India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, mainly as an ornamental tree due to its striking appearance.

Although the flower is fragrant, the fruit is not edible for humans. However, different parts of the tree are used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

A Memory to Cherish

Writing this blog brought back a wave of nostalgia. What started as a simple moment on the roadside turned into a meaningful discovery.

I’m truly grateful to my brother, who encouraged me to write about this beautiful flower. Sometimes, the most unexpected encounters leave the deepest impressions.
